This is another dilemma a forum owner may go through. Some forums wanted to be a friendly utopia where everyone gets along. There are sites that succeeded on that format but there are forums that failed because everyone is just agreeing with each other the point the whole forum have gone stale.

This is the reason why some Forums allows members to debate or worst attack each other personally. Gamefaqs is one of the most successful forums out there and that whole place is a flame zone.

To all the Forum owners here. Would you allow members to be hostile to each other for the sake of traffic?

Forum is a sharing platform. I won't allow anything that is against advertiser policy (for instance, no porn, no weapon promotion etc.. However, I don't have any problem when members have contentious debate. Unless they begin to use swear words, will let the debate continue. I respect freedom of expression.

I used to be a member of a horse racing website where most members are bettors so expect some closenesa and camaraderie. But arguments cannot be avoided especially when it comes to analysis of a past race. There was a clash between 2 members that expanded when some others joined sides. It's good that the admin and mods were quick to suspend those involved. Using private message, the problem was resolved. It's not good to sse flaming posts in a forum, it's an eye sore.

Some forums are like the streets of North Korea. These only survive when they are the official forum of some product or website that already attracts people by itself. I can't stand a place like this. Any slight disagreement, and the mods are all up into locking the thread, when they aren't deleting it right away.

What's the point of a forum where everyone is saying "me too" to each other?

Under no circumstances would I allow people to flame each other on any board of mine. I feel that gives the forum a very negative climate and is very likely to drive members away. Good-natured ripping, on the other hand, can be acceptable in some circumstances. It all depends on how tight-knit your community is.

It's ok for people to disagree and even to argue, but when people start with personal attacks then it becomes a problem at that point. Flame wars can make people feel unwelcome and they may end up leaving, so for that reason I don't allow it.

I think as long as as they don't cross the line and become sexist, racist and discriminatory there might not be a problem. If people cannot take the heat, a block button could be handy and helpful for people who don't want flaming. I notice that majority of successful forums allows flaming. Gaming forums like Shoryuken, Gamefaqs and IGN alllow members to fight.

There is a forum known as Pinoyexchange and that site use to be super active until they decided to make it a no flame zone. The site is now dying and the decrease of activity is killing it.

A deserts would be empty without the cactuses.
If somebody wants to attack me verbally, let it be, I don't need to respond or even talk to that person. There are other people.
For the sake of individual freedom and choice a page should allow an individual to block the people they don't want to correspond with.
