When we are talking about Web Designing, the presence of HTML and CSS are considered. In achieving a Website, there are factors considered and the basics are the HTML and CSS coding. This is where the scratches happens.

HTML which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language is used in describing a document. It is a markup language that is coded to show text or documents in a certain website.

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets defines how HTML elements are to be displayed in a certain page. Knowledge in HTML is required before continuing is CSS. In this coding, the formatting, background and documents are enhanced. For example, in HTML, the word " I Love You" is coded, coloring it with red is done by CSS.

A website is consist of documents, that is how HTML and CSS works.

Thanks for educating me on on these two factors which are crucial for web designing. Without a knowledge of these languages we cannot make unique, personalized web sites, but to depend on templates alone.

HTML as you already said is the basic language in which a website is encoded. It is the only language known by the website programming. CSS is an advanced addition to this which apply a particular command to all linked pages. It saves a lot of time for programmers. Now they do not have to spend a lot of time entering each and every command time and again. CSS is a life saver for them.

Your welcome techseeker, but this is just the simpliest part. As factors in web designing, this is just the basic because in building a Website, the most crucial is the Programming. As your website content are already established, programming will then take place to perform its application in the website. In programming, specific programming language is coded to make the website interactive. This is where the technical part is done.

I didn't know that this thread is for absolute newbies.

Yes. I do agree with that.
HTML and CSS are the core building blocks for web designing. Today many people prefer font awesome, for some unknown reason. Whether we are talking icons or hava scripts, font-awesome is really popular. As it helps with the look and feel of the website, I do consider it as a designing factor for web designing :D

HTML and CSS serve two separate and distinct basic purposes, that many other languages such as Javascript, PHP, and others build upon. They're also great languages to learn for beginners and are very valuable to know down the road because there are many situations where folks who are otherwise "non-programmers" would benefit from knowing some basic HTML and CSS. It's kind of like taking Latin in high school, even if you don't ever write it or speak it down the road, it helps you decipher words in many other classes you may be taking or professions you may be pursuing down the road.

One great example where it would come into handy to know HTML and some CSS would be if you are writing articles in Wordpress for your web site. By default Wordpress only gives you limited styling options when creating a post or a page, but if you needed a more complex layout such as with tables and iframes, you would need to jump over to the code view. If you know the HTML and CSS, you can simply code these tables and such yourself instead of having to rely on yet another plugin. Or you may be cutting and pasting content into Wordpress, and need to go in and manually clean up some of the HTML afterwards.

HTML is simply meant to assign structure to content, it's similar to making an "outline" of a report you wrote in high school. Without any structure the content of a web page just looks like one big garbled collection of words and text.

CSS is used to control the visual appearance of the page content, independent of the HTML. With CSS you can completely change the look and feel of a page without having to modify the HTML code much if at all.
