Google, shockingly, still thinks directories can be a small help. However, the directory has to be high quality. Note, a high-quality directory has to certain qualities. For one thing, it must be willing to turn down low-quality websites. It should also avoid the use of automated registration.

Anyhow, whether the directory is paid or free makes no difference to Google. Google does not consider well-maintained directories to be paid links. Note, it has a massive penalty against the buying and selling of links.

Oh, by the way, does anyone know if directories are good for Bing and Yahoo?

Yes, because it will help promote good quality websites, especially directories with high quality will easily be noticed. Unlike before, it so much hard to look for better client base directories, some of them might not attract any consumers at all. Others, don't refer such thing, but the good thing today was SEO become more help when it comes, the visitor, sometimes the customer looking something in easiest way.

Directories have two purpose, one to generate traffic, two to build backlink. Directory submission is good as long as you submit your website to a good directory (has a high ranking on search engine, does not have links that promotes illegal things such as weapons, drugs an porn). However, you must also stay away from submitting on to many directories. Excesive backlinking will ultimately harm your website.

Directories are now ignored by the google. Not many directories are there with value. And the google is reducing every day. And so on that basis, and the way directories are closing. You can see that proper directories are not much maintained. And for the same reason I think it's better not to waste the time with the directories these days.
